Sandy Van Iderstine

Sandy Van Iderstine is a New York and Toronto based abstract artist working in acrylic. Since beginning her painting career in in 2006 her work has been exhibited and collected in Canada and the USA.

She is fortunate to have travelled extensively for her career  as a fashion executive and beyond, and has been immersed in the art world for decades conversing regularly with curators, writers, artists and gallerists. She has had the opportunity  to attend art fairs, and to visit museum and galleries internationally which has enriched her passion for art and has exposed her to great artists. Historical masters such as Van Gogh, Cezanne and Turner’s innovative techniques and 20th century icons  such as Matisse, Avery and Frankenthaler have inspired her to experiment with creativity

In the past couple of years her paintings were featured in two exhibitions at Adjacent to Life Gallery in New York which marked a significant milestone in her artistic career.

Van Iderstine’s work is best known for its mysterious nature, surface texture and tone created by an energetic and fluid style. Contained in her paintings is a reflection of the transformative effects of darkness and light in our world. The work invites the viewer to explore a unique interplay of shapes, colours, transparencies and textures resulting in  a dynamic and engaging visual experience.  In many of the pieces the abstract work subtlety incorporates the substance of landscapes physical elements - air, water, fire or earth.

To produce these paintings she dilutes acrylic paint with mediums, gels and water in successive layers and applies it via pouring, spraying or dripping it onto the canvas. All of this work is created on a flat table with a pallet knife so that it is viewed from above as the process continues. Then each painting also includes collaged pieces of acrylic skins from the pallet layered on to the painting.

The result is a confident and expressive piece.

Van Iderstine was born in Winnipeg, Canada where she returns often to visit family. She currently lives and paints in Toronto and New York City.
