Sandy Van Iderstine

Sandy Van Iderstine is a New York and Toronto- based artist who specializes in abstract painting. Since beginning her painting career in 2006, her work has been exhibited in various shows and in her studio, often visited by colleagues, collectors, teachers and curators. Renowned critics such as Kenworth Moffett and Ken Carpenter have given beneficial comments to the work. Her paintings belong to numerous private collections in Canada and the USA. Recently, she has had pieces promised to 2 museums in China.

Van Iderstine’s work is best known for its mysterious nature, surface texture and tone created by an energetic and fluid style. Contained in her paintings is a reflection of the transformative effects of darkness and light in our world.

As a fashion executive, Van Iderstine frequently traveled internationally. Her lifelong passion for visual arts is continually fueled by her visits to museums and galleries throughout the world, and the painting masters she witnesses in them. Van Iderstine has also been profoundly influenced by Post-War American art exhibited in New York City, where she creates and resides during the gallery season. Her work is further inspired by her love of history literature, theatre, architecture, nature and fashion.

Through highly personal techniques combining acrylic paint, mediums and water on canvas Van Iderstine has developed her own creative vocabulary. Colors are applied in multiple layers with palette knives, painting rags and wooden skewers, resulting in a harmonious panorama of pattern and illusion. Her painting process entirely without brushes encourages an application that is both confident and expressive.

Born in Winnipeg, Canada, Sandy Van Iderstine is of Icelandic descent, and currently lives and paints in Toronto and New York.
